Editorial Review of Resistance (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Captain Jean-Luc Picard, his ship repaired, must now reassemble his crew. With the departure of both William Riker and ship's counsellor Deannna Troi, the captain must replace his two most trusted advisors. He chooses a Vulcan, a logical choice, and for his new first officer, Worf. But the Klingon refuses the promotion and the new ship's counsellor appears to actively dislike Worf. A simple shake-down mission should settle everything. Except that once again, the captain hears the song of the Borg collective. Admiral Janeway is convinced that the Borg have been crushed and are no longer a threat. Picard believes she is wrong, and that if the Enterprise doesn't act the entire Federation will be under the domination of its most oppressive enemy.

Review Summary: The Borg are Back!
Review: Star Trek: Resistance is an incredible Borg thriller. It includes all the basics for a good Star Trek novel: genuine characters, a worthy villain, a driving plot, a sense of importance for the crew, and mild technobabble (for us who can't survive without it).

JM Dillard really brings the new Next Generation crew to life. She clearly and engagingly shows us the inner workings of Jean-Luc Picard's mind as it is ravaged by the ominous turmoil of Borg chatter. Her dialogue is true to character and really illuminates the deep-rooted relationships between the old TNG cast, as well as the fledgling relationships between the new crew members and the veteran explorers. Her descriptions of the characters are precise and add a unique flare to her script--from the way Worf's lips curl in disapproval to the furrows of a concerned Picard's brow, the details draw the characters out to an almost tangible level.

The plot, though rather simplistic (stop the Borg invasion at all costs!), is an exciting one. The anticipation of battle, the suspenseful fights on the Borg cube, and the desperation of the crew seem genuine.

My only concerns with the book are minor. It bugged my when the security team constantly yelled, "Recalibrate phasers!" when I believe the word should be "remodulate." Also, since when did looking into a phaser fight have a blinding effect on someone?

Overall, this book was completely satisfactory. Be forewarned that it is an action novel with violence and some gruesome descriptions, but I regard it as a must-read for Borg/TNG fans.

Review Summary: Wildly Disappointing
Review: I had such high hopes. Terrible. The follow-up book, Before Dishonor, is equally awful. (The latter is easily Peter David's worst book by a wide margin. He's a terrific author, but missed the mark by a continent).

The only saving grace for these two books are how David Mack built on the storyline in his Destiny trilogy. You almost have to read these two to get some of the finer points, which is too bad. You've been warned.

Of the several hundred Star Trek books I've read, these two rank in the bottom four. (The other two being Voyager's Homecoming two-parter).

Review Summary: Don't bother
Review: Very little happens in this book except the exploration of the feelings of a few characters, most of whom you won't care about. Has none of the breezy action or easy characterization you'd expect from a Star Trek novel, and nothing else really to drive the plot forward or make you think.

Review Summary: Very well done Borg story
Review: I found this novel entertaining and quite well done, connecting up storylines and Star Trek Voyager and TNG. I enjoyed the Crusher/Picard storyline, but I didn't completely like the characterization of Janeway, but it was close enough. I loved both Voyager and TNG and found it a good read.

Review Summary: Why is everyone so.... Resistant?
Review: I picked this book up about a week ago, had never heard of it before because, as you can tell from reading my previous reviews, I haven't been reading much lately and as a result, haven't been keeping up with this Star Trek series like I have in the past.

I immediately assumed from the title that we would get to see some more Borg action in this book and I was correct. This book starts with a bang and keeps you page-turning all the way to the end. I do not understand some of the reviews I have read on this book which say it slows in the middle. I didn't find that to be fact at all. In fact, after Picard volunteers to becomes Locutus again (with a neural transmitter that inhibits total Borg take-over), the action starts to pile up and intensify when he is re-captured and re-assimilated the Borg way.

So once I picked up this book and read a chapter or 2, then came home and looked it up on this site to read reviews, I was disappointed because I thought it wasn't going to end strong. However, don't let these previous false reviews sway you. Perhaps some people didn't like the book and I am sure that the author isn't going to please everyone, but I enjoyed this read. I thought it built on itself and kept you interested and coming back for more.
