Editorial Review of Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader (Star Wars)

Throughout the galaxy, it was believed that Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker–the Chosen One–had died on Coruscant during the siege of the Jedi Temple. And, to some extent, that was true. Anakin was dead.

From the site of Anakin Skywalker’s last stand–on the molten surface of the planet Mustafar, where he sought to destroy his friend and former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi–a fearsome specter in black has risen. Once the most powerful Knight ever known to the Jedi Order, he is now a disciple of the dark side, a lord of the dreaded Sith, and the avenging right hand of the galaxy’s ruthless new Emperor. Seduced, deranged, and destroyed by the machinations of the Dark Lord Sidious, Anakin Skywalker is dead . . . and Darth Vader lives.

Word of the events that created him–the Jedi Council’s failed mutiny against Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the self-crowned Emperor’s retaliatory command to exterminate the Jedi Order, and Anakin’s massacre of his comrades and Masters in the Jedi Temple–has yet to reach all quarters. On the Outer Rim world of Murkhana, Jedi Masters Roan Shryne and Bol Chatak and Padawan Olee Starstone are leading a charge on a Separatist stronghold, unaware that the tide, red with Jedi blood, has turned suddenly against them.

When the three narrowly elude execution–and become the desperate prey in a hunt across space–it’s neither clone soldiers, nor the newly deployed stormtroopers, nor even the wrath of the power-hungry Emperor himself they must fear most. The deadliest threat rests in the hideously swift and lethal crimson lightsaber of Darth Vader–behind whose brooding mask lies a shattered heart, a poisoned soul, and a cunning, twisted mind hell-bent on vengeance.

For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padmé Amidala. Separated after Padmé’s death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime–and the unspeakable power of the dark side.

Review Summary: Solid work
Review: The novel actually begins just before Order 66 has been given.

You get to read about the last vestages of Anakin being purged from Vader's psyche and his transformation to the Darth Vader we see in the Original Trilogy.

The storyline is plausible and interconnected to Revenge of the Sith. At the very end of the Novel, the Empire through the help of Tarkin invade Kashyyyk and enslave 200,000 wookiees to help build the Death Star. So, there is a good continuity in this Novel. I can't understate that point enough. If you've ever read 'Rogue Planet' or 'The Approaching Storm', you know what I mean.

The action sequences are well laid out. But, expectedly, Vader vanquishs 4 Jedi and maimes 2 others; if my memory serves.

Nice edition to the SW Universe. A solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Review Summary: One of the best SW novels thus far...
Review: Forget what the negative reviewers say - who knows what they were thinking or what their motivation is...perhaps they've sold themselves to the Dark Side?

Some of the SW books are really bad - the Courtship of Princess Leia comes to mind. But this is one of the best.

Pay attention to the large number of reviewers and stars, trust in them.

Review Summary: Book 22 out of 107 - Good but not great
Review: First, lets start with the fact that this book is book 22 in the chronological order of books for the Star Wars Series. Any real fan of the series just would not "pick up this book" they would go back to it after reading revenge of the sith. Picking up books and just reading them really will not get you anywhere with the star wars series anymore. The books all have an order that must be adhered to. Trust me, you learn much more about the characters this way. The references in the movies suddenly make sense and you realize they are not just one liners but hold truth to the universe and the epic story that is Star Wars. This is definitely not the best book in the series, but the information provided is typical to that of say, Yoda, Dark Rendezvous which setups up Labyrinth of Evil then leads into Revenge of the Sith. Keeping a open mind and understanding this is just after Darth Vader was created. This is a detailed view into his entrance into the Star Wars universe.

Review Summary: I am still waiting to see when Darth Vader will be powerful.
Review: Overall entertaining read, although I think any book written about a between film hallmark Lucas character has a Very Very restricted story line. I'm sure Luceno did what he could with the character, but ultimately I feel like something is missing. I was expecting to see why the galaxy feared Vader, but mostly just saw his increasing limitations. Anakin/Darth Vader a Sith creation supposedly has the most Force potential, but all he really does is throw stuff and choke? I guess I was hoping for a bit more than Vader angst. It is ingenious how Luceno tries to work with Vader's limitations, especially describing in a justifying way the limited movie props of the 70's i.e. Vader's suit and empire space craft. Worth a read.

Review Summary: The best Star wars book I've read so far
Review: I loved this book it was really well done and gave me what I was longing to know about Anakin/Vader. At the end of episode three I remember wondering how Anakin dealt with his new suit and the lack for compassion he was suppose to have. I wanted to know if the good part of him continued to fight and that is explored in this book so I thought that was awesome. This book made Anakin/Vader my favorite charecter in the Star Wars universe.
